Jubilation, Excitement as Ekwunife reclaims mandate

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party for Senate Anambra Central, Senator Uche Ekwunife as the winner of the February 23, 2019 Anambra Central Senatorial election.

Announcing the result on Wenedsday at INEC office Amawbia, the returning officer, Prof Charles Amobi Nwankwo stated that the PDP Candidate, Senator Uche Ekwunife pulled a total of 118,484 votes to defeat her rivals, Senator Victor Umeh of APGA and Chief Sylvester Okonkwo of APC who scored 81,429 and 10,999 respectively.

Ekwunife’s victory has sparked a wave of jubilation and excitement in Awka.

Recall that in 2015, Senator Ekwunife won the Senate seat of Anambra Central and was subsequently sworn in, however her stay in the Senate was cut short by an infamous Appeal Court judgement that truncated a mandate that was adjudged by political analysts to be the people’s will.

Senator Ekwunife victory margin of 37,055 votes is a clear indication of her acceptance and popularity. She won the popular votes in the seven local governments in the Senatorial district to defeat her closest rival and incumbent Senator, Victor Umeh.
